How it works

SMC MTF combines funded delivery, stock-level margin and mandatory pledge

SMC Margin Trading Facility increases cash-equity buying power by funding the eligible balance after your required margin. The actual structure depends on SMC's approved Group I list, the stock's risk margin and successful pledge of the funded shares.

Funding

Buying power can reach up to four times deposited funds

SMC's current direct-account offer advertises up to 4× MTF. For journaling, record the rupee amount SMC actually funded on the position because that is the capital exposed to financing cost.

Group I margin

The stock's VaR and ELM determine required contribution

SMC's policy applies risk-based initial margin and can require more than the regulatory cash-market minimum. That makes stock-specific margin a more reliable journal field than assuming every MTF trade uses the maximum leverage.

OTP pledge

Funded shares must become Margin Funding Pledge

SMC initiates the MTF pledge request after the trade, and its published policy requires OTP authorization by 12 PM on T+1. Missing that step can turn pledge status into a square-off risk.

SMC can revise stock eligibility, margin, exposure and commercial terms. Confirm the current MTF screen and account tariff before trading.

The blind spot

Three SMC MTF risks can change the trade after the buy order fills

Gross P&L only tells you what happened to the stock price. SMC's MTF framework also depends on the live funded balance, maintenance margin, pledge completion and continuing Group I eligibility.

1

The current rate and the formal policy document may not match

SMC's current consumer MTF page displays 0.049% per day / 18% p.a., while an older policy PDF still contains 0.07% per-day language unless otherwise agreed. Save the actual rate applied to the account so historical cost does not depend on a later page.

2

A 70% margin call can become a 60% liquidation problem

SMC's policy says a margin call is made below 70% of required margin and permits immediate liquidation if deposited margin value falls below 60%. The journal should record the margin path, not just the final forced sale.

3

Eligibility can disappear while the position is still funded

SMC's Risk Management Committee can change its approved list, and its policy also covers Group I stocks that move into T2T, ASM/GSM or suspension. An eligibility change can therefore become a funding exit even when your thesis is unchanged.

The fix

Make SMC's funding, pledge and margin state part of the trade record

QbarTrade can organise the MTF position around the events that change its economics: funded amount, daily financing, stock margin, pledge authorization, collateral value, shortfall and broker risk action.

Funded amount

Separate market exposure from the amount financed by SMC

Keep purchase value, your margin and SMC-funded capital in separate fields. Then interest can be tied to the borrowing that created it instead of being estimated from total trade value later.

Pledge trail

Treat T+1 pledge confirmation as a position event

Record when SMC initiated the pledge and when the OTP was approved. If pledge confirmation fails, the journal should show that the resulting square-off came from settlement mechanics rather than your trading plan.

Margin path

Keep shortfalls and collateral changes beside P&L

SMC marks funded shares and collateral to market daily. Record additional funds, collateral replacements, margin calls and forced reductions so the final return reflects the capital path of the trade.

Using it well

Three SMC MTF checks worth doing before leverage becomes an RMS problem

SMC gives MTF users buying power, but its policy puts equal weight on eligibility, pledge completion and maintenance margin. A journal should make those operational checks visible before the broker has to act.

01 · Approved stock

Save the SMC MTF eligibility state when you enter

Group I classification alone is not enough—SMC also uses its own approved category list. Recording eligibility at entry keeps later list changes from altering the history of the setup.

02 · Margin buffer

Review margin before the 70% call threshold is reached

Waiting for the broker's margin call reduces your ability to choose the response. Track available versus required margin so additional cash, collateral or position reduction remains a deliberate trade decision.

03 · Reconciliation

Match QbarTrade against SMC's daily MTF margin statement

SMC's policy requires MTF margin and collateral to be identified separately in daily margin statements. Use those broker records to validate funded capital, margin events and final charges.

FAQ

SMC Global MTF interest, leverage, pledge and margin-call questions

What is SMC Global MTF?

SMC Global Margin Trading Facility lets eligible clients buy approved equity shares by contributing the required margin while SMC funds the remaining eligible amount. The funded shares are pledged under the MTF mechanism and remain subject to interest, maintenance margin and SMC risk-management rules.

What is the current SMC Global MTF interest rate?

SMC's current public MTF financing page displays 0.049% per day, described as 18% p.a., on the funded amount. Broker pricing can change, and older policy documents can contain different wording, so confirm the rate currently applicable to your SMC account before placing or reviewing a trade.

How is SMC MTF interest calculated?

The useful base is the amount actually funded by SMC, not the total purchase value. Multiply the funded balance by the applicable daily interest rate and the number of funded days, then reconcile that estimate with the broker ledger and statement.

How much leverage does SMC Global MTF provide?

SMC's current online account offer advertises up to 4× MTF against deposited funds. Actual funding depends on the stock, the margin SMC requires and the collateral accepted for that client, so the position-level funded amount is more useful for journaling than the headline multiple.

Which stocks are eligible for SMC MTF?

SMC's MTF policy says eligible securities must be part of Group I and also appear in SMC's own MTF Approved Category List. SMC's Risk Management Committee can include or exclude securities from that approved list, so eligibility should be checked again before each funded trade.

How does SMC calculate the required MTF margin?

SMC's published policy uses stock-level risk measures. For Group I stocks available in F&O, the applicable initial margin is VaR plus three times ELM or SMC MTF VaR, whichever is higher. For other Group I stocks, it is VaR plus five times ELM or SMC MTF VaR, whichever is higher.

How does the SMC MTF pledge process work?

SMC's policy says stocks purchased under MTF must be compulsorily pledged and tagged as Margin Funding Pledge. SMC initiates the pledge request on the trade date, and the client must authorize the depository request by OTP latest by 12 PM on T+1.

What happens if I do not authorize the SMC MTF pledge?

SMC's policy states that an MTF pending purchase may be squared off on T+2 if the client does not authenticate the pledge OTP, with communication sent to the registered mobile number and email address.

When does SMC issue an MTF margin call?

SMC's current MTF policy says a margin call is made when available margin falls below 70% of the margin required. The client is expected to make good the deficiency, and unresolved shortfalls can lead to liquidation under SMC's risk rules.

When can SMC Global square off an MTF position?

SMC's policy allows immediate liquidation in several situations. One published trigger is when the value of margin deposited for funded stocks falls below 60% of required margin. It also identifies persistent maintenance-margin shortages, unresolved margin calls and failed pledge authentication as possible square-off conditions.

Does SMC provide a daily MTF margin statement?

Yes. SMC's published policy states that daily margin statements sent to clients should identify MTF margin and collateral separately. It also requires funded stocks and collateral stocks to remain separately identifiable for computing the funding amount.

Can I use securities as margin for SMC MTF?

SMC's policy allows initial margin in cash, cash equivalent or eligible Group I equity securities with the applicable haircut. SMC retains discretion to reject collateral or apply a reduced value based on its risk policy.

What charges should an SMC MTF trading journal track?

Track MTF interest on funded capital, account-specific brokerage, pledge or unpledge costs, DP charges when applicable, statutory charges, margin-shortfall events and any liquidation-related costs. SMC states that brokerage, DP tariff and other account charges can vary by client plan, so the broker statement should be used for the final numbers.

What should a QbarTrade journal track for SMC Global MTF?

Track trade value, your margin, SMC-funded amount, daily interest rate, funded days, stock eligibility, VaR or ELM margin context, pledge status, daily margin, margin calls, collateral changes, forced square-offs and final net P&L. That turns the broker's account-level MTF information into a trade-level financing history.
