What is margin in trading?

Margin is the amount of money or eligible collateral that must be available to open and maintain a leveraged market position. It supports settlement and protects the trading system against the risk that a position moves adversely before obligations are completed.

A margin calculator helps you estimate this blocked capital before placing an order. It is especially useful for equity intraday trades, futures and option selling, where the position value can be much larger than the cash initially required. Margin is not a brokerage charge and it is not the maximum amount you can lose. A leveraged position can create losses beyond the amount initially blocked.

How is trading margin calculated?

For a simple percentage-based estimate, calculate the total contract value and apply the margin rate for the selected segment.

Real derivatives margin is not calculated from one fixed percentage. SPAN parameters, exposure or extreme-loss margin, premium obligations, portfolio offsets and additional exchange or broker margins can change the final requirement.

SPAN margin

A portfolio-based risk estimate designed to cover potential losses under multiple market scenarios. It changes with contract risk, volatility and exchange parameters.

Exposure / extreme-loss margin

An additional buffer collected above the initial risk amount to protect against adverse moves that may not be fully captured by the base model.

Premium and crystallised obligations

Option premium payable and realised intraday losses may also consume available funds and become part of the total amount needed to carry positions.

Additional and delivery margins

Exchanges or brokers may levy extra margin during high volatility, concentration, pre-expiry or physical-delivery periods.

Portfolio margin can be different from leg-by-leg margin

The option-selling example uses an underlying notional value only to demonstrate the calculator's percentage logic. A broker's live option margin depends on the actual contract, strike, expiry, volatility, quantity and portfolio hedges.

Risk and exposure

Margin is not the same as maximum loss

The amount blocked by the broker supports the position, but the position's price movement determines profit and loss.

Margin required

The capital or collateral blocked to open and carry a position. It can increase when volatility, losses or exchange requirements change.

Market exposure

The full contract or position value whose price changes affect your account. Exposure can be several times larger than blocked margin.

Trade risk

Available funds

The amount currently free after used margin and obligations. Available funds can fall quickly when mark-to-market losses accumulate.

The blocked amount is not a stop loss. A leveraged trade can lose more than the initial margin when the market moves sharply.

SPAN and other risk parameters vary by underlying, strike, expiry, volatility and portfolio composition.

Ignoring lot size and contract multiplier

A derivatives price is not always the total contract value. Convert lots into the correct exchange quantity before estimating exposure.

Using all available margin

Maintain a buffer for mark-to-market losses, volatility changes, premiums, charges and additional broker or exchange margin.

What is a margin calculator?

What is margin in trading?

Margin is the amount of funds or eligible collateral required to open and maintain a leveraged trading position. It is a risk deposit, not a fee. The broker or clearing system blocks it while the position is open and may require more funds when risk or volatility increases.

How is trading margin calculated?

What is SPAN margin?

SPAN stands for Standard Portfolio Analysis of Risk. It is a portfolio-based risk system used to estimate the potential loss of a derivatives portfolio across multiple market scenarios. SPAN parameters can change during the trading day as volatility and risk conditions change.

What is exposure or extreme-loss margin?

Exposure or extreme-loss margin is an additional risk buffer collected over and above the base initial margin. It helps cover losses that may arise during unusually adverse market movements and can vary by product, underlying and exchange rules.

How much margin is required for intraday equity trading?

Indian cash-market trades generally require minimum upfront margin based on applicable VaR and extreme-loss requirements; a 20% minimum is commonly used as the baseline for intraday cash-market margin collection. Brokers may require more, restrict leverage for volatile stocks or allow intraday products only on eligible securities.

How much margin is required for futures trading?

Futures margin is dynamic rather than one fixed percentage. The required amount can include SPAN, exposure or extreme-loss margin, crystallised obligations, delivery or pre-expiry margin and additional margins. This page uses an approximate rate only for planning, so check the live broker margin before placing a futures order.

How is option selling margin calculated?

Option selling margin depends on the underlying, strike, expiry, volatility, position side and the rest of the portfolio. A hedged spread may receive a margin benefit, while an uncovered short option usually requires more capital. Live SPAN-based broker calculations should be used for the final order.

Do option buyers need margin?

An option buyer normally pays the full premium and related charges upfront rather than the risk-based short-option margin used by sellers. This calculator's options setting is labelled for option selling, so it should not be treated as an option-premium calculator.

What is the difference between margin and leverage?

Margin is the capital blocked for a position. Leverage is the position value divided by that margin. For example, a ₹1,00,000 position requiring ₹20,000 margin represents 5× exposure. Higher leverage increases both profit sensitivity and loss sensitivity.

Why can broker margin differ from this calculator margin?

A broker's live margin can differ because exchanges update risk parameters, volatility changes, positions are netted at portfolio level, hedges may receive benefits, losses or premiums may be payable, and the broker may apply additional risk controls. Always treat the displayed amount as an estimate.

Can pledged shares be used as margin?

Eligible securities may be pledged as collateral subject to broker and exchange rules, approved-security lists, valuation haircuts and cash-component requirements. Pledged collateral does not remove market risk or the need to maintain sufficient available margin.

What happens when available margin becomes insufficient?

A margin shortfall can lead to a margin call, restrictions on new positions, penalties under applicable rules or broker square-off of positions. Fast market moves can cause utilisation to rise quickly, so traders should keep a buffer instead of using all available margin.

Is trading margin the same as profit margin?

No. Trading margin is capital blocked to support a market position. Profit margin is a business metric calculated from profit and revenue. A search for calculator margin can refer to either concept, but this QbarTrade tool calculates trading margin, not sales or gross profit margin.
