What is a pip?

A pip (short for Percentage in Point) is the standardized unit of price measurement in forex trading. For most currency pairs (such as EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and AUD/USD), a pip represents a change in the fourth decimal place (0.0001).

However, for pairs involving the Japanese Yen (such as USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, and GBP/JPY), a pip represents a change in the second decimal place (0.01). Knowing the monetary value of a pip allows traders to calculate risk, determine stop-loss amounts, and maintain consistent position sizing.

How is pip value calculated?

The base formula for calculating pip value in the pair's quote currency is:

Pip Value (in Quote Currency) = Position Size (in Units) × Pip Size

1. When account currency matches quote currency

If your account currency is USD and you trade EUR/USD (where USD is the quote currency), no exchange rate conversion is required. The quote currency value equals your account currency value directly.

2. When account currency matches base currency

If your account currency is EUR and you trade EUR/USD, the quote currency result (USD) is divided by the prevailing EUR/USD exchange rate to express the pip value in EUR.

3. When account currency differs from both currencies

If your account currency is INR or EUR and you trade USD/JPY, the JPY pip value is converted into your account currency using the corresponding quote-to-account exchange rate (e.g. JPY/INR or JPY/EUR).

Pip value by lot size

In forex, trading volume is typically measured in lots. Here is how pip values compare across standard lot categories for EUR/USD on a USD account:

Lot categoryVolume in unitsEUR/USD pip sizePip value (USD)
Standard Lot (1.0)$100,000 units0.0001$10.00
Mini Lot (0.10)10,000 units0.0001$1.00
Micro Lot (0.01)1,000 units0.0001$0.10

Note: EUR/USD values assume a USD account. For cross pairs or other account currencies, conversion rates apply.

How pip value works for JPY pairs

Japanese Yen pairs (USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY, AUD/JPY, CAD/JPY, CHF/JPY) behave differently from standard four-decimal currency pairs:

  • Pip location: The second decimal place (0.01) represents one pip.
  • Quote value: One standard lot (100,000 units) generates 1,000 JPY per pip.
  • Account conversion: Divide the 1,000 JPY by the USD/JPY rate (e.g. 150.00) to get $6.67 per pip on a USD account.

Pip-value examples by currency pair

Here are 5 concrete worked examples demonstrating direct, inverse, and cross currency conversion:

EUR/USD — USD account

USD 10.00 per pip
Position size: 100,000 units (1 Standard Lot)
Pip size: 0.0001
Formula: 100,000 × 0.0001

Movement: A 20-pip move equals USD 200.00 gain/loss.

Because USD is both the quote currency and account currency, no currency conversion is required.

GBP/USD — EUR account

EUR 0.92 per pip
Position size: 10,000 units (1 Mini Lot)
Pip size: 0.0001
Formula: (10,000 × 0.0001) × 0.92 (1 USD = 0.92 EUR)

Movement: A 50-pip move equals EUR 46.00 gain/loss.

The $1.00 USD quote value is converted to EUR using the current USD/EUR exchange rate.

USD/JPY — USD account

USD 6.67 per pip
Position size: 100,000 units (1 Standard Lot)
Pip size: 0.01
Formula: (100,000 × 0.01) ÷ 150.00 (USD/JPY rate)

Movement: A 30-pip move equals USD 200.00 gain/loss.

The 1,000 JPY quote value is divided by the current USD/JPY exchange rate (150.00) to yield USD.

EUR/GBP — USD account

USD 6.25 per pip
Position size: 50,000 units (0.5 Standard Lots)
Pip size: 0.0001
Formula: (50,000 × 0.0001) × 1.25 (1 GBP = 1.25 USD)

Movement: A 40-pip move equals USD 250.00 gain/loss.

The 5 GBP quote value is converted to USD using the GBP/USD exchange rate.

GBP/JPY — EUR account

EUR 0.62 per pip
Position size: 10,000 units (1 Mini Lot)
Pip size: 0.01
Formula: (10,000 × 0.01) ÷ 162.00 (EUR/JPY rate)

Movement: A 100-pip move equals EUR 61.73 gain/loss.

The 100 JPY quote value is converted into EUR using the prevailing EUR/JPY exchange rate.

What is the difference between a pip and a pipette?

A pipette is a fractional pip representing 1/10th of a pip (0.1 pips). Modern forex brokers display 5 decimal places for standard pairs (e.g. 1.08505) and 3 decimal places for JPY pairs (e.g. 150.125).

Example: If EUR/USD moves from 1.08500 to 1.08505, the price moved 5 pipettes, which equals 0.5 pips. Standard pip calculators calculate risk based on full pips.

How pip value connects to position sizing

Pip value tells you how much your account equity changes for every pip move. Position sizing works in reverse: it starts with your maximum acceptable risk (e.g. 1% of account capital) and your stop-loss distance in pips, then calculates the maximum number of lots or units you can trade.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pip calculator?

A pip calculator is an online tool that calculates the monetary value of one pip—or a larger pip movement—for any currency pair, position size, and account currency. It helps traders know their exact monetary risk per pip before placing a trade.

How do I calculate pip value?

To calculate pip value, multiply your trade size in base-currency units by the pair's pip size (usually 0.0001 for non-JPY pairs and 0.01 for JPY pairs). If your account currency differs from the pair's quote currency, convert the result using the current quote-to-account exchange rate.

How much is one pip worth?

There is no single universal value for one pip. Pip value depends on the currency pair you trade, your position size in units, and your account currency. For example, 1 standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD is worth $10 per pip on a USD account, while a micro lot (1,000 units) is worth $0.10 per pip.

How much is one pip worth for a standard lot?

For 1 standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD with a USD account, 1 pip is worth exactly $10.00. For cross pairs or different account currencies (such as EUR or GBP accounts), the pip value is converted based on prevailing exchange rates.

What is the pip value of a mini or micro lot?

For EUR/USD on a USD account: a mini lot (10,000 units) has a pip value of $1.00 per pip, and a micro lot (1,000 units) has a pip value of $0.10 per pip. Fractional lot sizes (like 0.25 lots = $2.50 per pip) scale proportionally.

How are pips calculated for JPY pairs?

For Japanese Yen pairs (such as USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, or GBP/JPY), the standard pip is the second decimal place (0.01) rather than the fourth decimal (0.0001). The resulting quote currency value is in JPY, which is then converted into your account currency.

What is a pipette?

A pipette is a fractional pip representing one-tenth (1/10th) of a standard pip. On five-decimal forex quotes (e.g. 1.08505), the fifth decimal is the pipette. On three-decimal JPY quotes (e.g. 150.125), the third decimal is the pipette.

Does account currency affect pip value?

Yes. While the pip value in the pair's quote currency remains constant for a fixed position size, the final monetary value displayed in your account currency changes depending on the exchange rate between the quote currency and your account currency.

Does leverage change pip value?

No. Leverage determines the margin required to open a position, but it does not alter the monetary value of a pip for an established position size. A 100,000-unit position has the exact same $10/pip value regardless of whether your leverage is 1:30 or 1:500.

How does pip value relate to position size?

Pip value is a direct input for position sizing. Knowing your pip value allows you to convert your stop-loss distance in pips into total monetary risk. You can use our Position Size Calculator to work backward from your target risk amount to calculate exact lot sizes.
